Cornelius Winter was the Congregational Pastor, the chapel is now named after him, h 2 CONC e was the friend of Whitefield and the tutor of William Jay. He was the leader of 6 men who s 2 CONC tarted Sunday School in Gloucester and taught themselves - often regarded as the real start o 2 CONC f the voluntary system. Although Raikes had previously started Sunday Schools they had stoppe 2 CONC d after his death. According to F C Adey in A Cotswold Methodist Heritage hundreds of sunda 2 CONC y schools failed due to lack of funds and the trouble was threatening to become fatal unti 2 CONC l a school with unpaid teachers led by John Adey was set up in the Countess of Huntingdon's C 2 CONC hapel in St Mary's Square, Gloucester. 2 CONT 2 CONT While in Gloucester John was a drapers assistant, later he was engaged in business in Winslow 2 CONC , Buckinghamshire and spent his leisure time as an itinerant preacher. On Sundays he visite 2 CONC d different villages in the neighbourhood and began work in Great Horwood where he founde 2 CONC d a Sunday School for children that he found on the street. He found that adults also require 2 CONC d instruction, he gathered them together and found friends to speak to them. On one occasio 2 CONC n his friend did not arrive and so John preached his first sermon. Shortly after this he gav 2 CONC e up his business interests, moved to Great Horwood and devoted himself full time to his prea 2 CONC ching. In 1820 he was ordained after studying under Dr William Harris of Kingston, Surrey, wh 2 CONC o became a tutor at Hoxton Academy. According to West Gallery Churches website at http://www. 2 CONC westgallerychurches.com/Bucks/indexbucks.html the Sunday School in Great Horwood was starte 2 CONC d in about 1819 by John Adey of Winslow (Buckinghamshire) and led to the formation of an adul 2 CONC t congregation for the increased needs of which a barn was fitted up as a schoolhouse and pla 2 CONC ce of worship in 1821. A gallery was added 2 years later. The chapel, built as a barn, has br 2 CONC ick walls and a tiled roof but the original barn enterances are still visible in the north an 2 CONC d south walls. The interior retains its original seating with shaped ends to open benches. Th 2 CONC e gallery seats have open backs, the ends of two of which rise to slender posts serving as ca 2 CONC ndle sconces. The east gallery has a plain panelled front. An ecclesiastical census from 185 2 CONC 1 shows a general congregation of 140 for morning worship and 200 for evening worship. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1827 he took over from Rev James Skinner aged 78 who died after 42 years as Pastor in Cran 2 CONC brook, Kent. Cranbrook Independent Chapel was at that time known as the "Chapel on the Hill" 2 CONC . The church from Johns time is now three cottages which are private dwellings and one i 2 CONC s still called "Dissenters Cottage". The church records from this period are unfortunately mi 2 CONC ssing. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1830 he moved to Ramsgate, Kent (where he succeeded George Townsend). While in Ramsgate h 2 CONC e often used to visit London where he preached at Surrey Chapel. This church still has a cop 2 CONC y of his portrait signed "I am, your truly, Jno Adey". 2 CONT 2 CONT John preached to North Sea Fisherman in Bethel and was London Missionary Society director fro 2 CONC m 1832 to 1855. He was associated with continental work of the Sunday School Union, a hymn wr 2 CONC iter and phamphleteer, also a very early advocate (possibly 2nd) of early closing of shops. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Times on 2nd November 1836 featured a lengthy editorial/leader beginning "There has recen 2 CONC tly sprung up in the suburban district of Sloane-street a curious polemical warfare". The art 2 CONC icle discusses "irregular places of worship and unauthorised teachers" and in its conslusio 2 CONC n the article refers to the Rev Mr Adey late of Ramsgate. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1836 he became Pastor of the Union Chapel, Parish Street, Horsleydown, Southwark a chape 2 CONC l which had been built in 1823 to replace an earlier chapel in Back Street, Horsleydown. Her 2 CONC e he worked for 22 years, he built 2 schoolrooms, gathered a large church and congregation. H 2 CONC e is credited with forming useful institutions, bringing hundreds of people into the church a 2 CONC nd introducing many young men to the ministry. At this time a great religious revival was tak 2 CONC ing place and Johns sermon "The Night Cometh" was published selling over 150,000 copies in th 2 CONC e UK and colonies. Although long out of print in 2004 it is still possible to buy digital ele 2 CONC ctronic reprints from at least 2 publishers in the USA. The Tim 2 CONC es 12th May 1858 carries an announcement of the wedding of Mr Francis Hudson of Islington an 2 CONC d Miss Julia Anne West of Bexley married at the Congregational Chapel, New Bexley by Rev Joh 2 CONC n Adey. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1861 the church had financial problems and the pastor was not paid, John wrote them a rath 2 CONC er stern letter and offered to give up his fixed income in return for the pew rents. 2 CONT 2 CONT He retired in 1868 and on resigning a testimonial was presented to him at a public meeting pr 2 CONC esided over by his relative Mr Daniel Pratt amd attended by twenty other ministers. 2 CONT 2 CONT On 4th December 1869 he was struck with paralysis and he died 12 days later. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was buried in grave number 006231 at Abney Park Cemetery but unfortunately the sandstone m 2 CONC onument is badly weathered and almost unreadable although in 2004 it was possible to make ou 2 CONC t a reference to "The Night Cometh" and to "The Lord of the Vineyard" (a verse which is print 2 CONC ed inside the front cover of The Night Cometh). The cemetery records show that Julianna Dres 2 CONC ser was buried in the same grave on 1st March 1851, Julianna Dresser was the wife of John Dre 2 CONC sser, the mother of Alfred Dresser and that she was formerly Julianna Gooch, the sister of Jo 2 CONC hn's wife Eliza Ann Gooch. The Rev Robert Ashton officiated at Abney Park whilst funeral serm 2 CONC ons were preached by Rev H Young at Painswick, Rev H J Bevis at Ramsgate, Rev J Moss at Horse 2 CONC lydown and Rev E Mannering at Bexley Heath. 2 CONT 2 CONT John's obituary was published on page 300 of the 1871 Congregational Year Book and in the Feb 2 CONC ruary 1870 Evangelical Magazine. Ebeneze 2 CONC r Chapel was a Congregational chapel opened in King Street, Hammersmith in 1784 by a carpente 2 CONC r Mr West who had been holding devotional meetings in private houses in the area for the prev 2 CONC ious ten years. Following Ministers were Messers Fryer, Sheen, Day and Wilson, the dates ar 2 CONC e not known. In 1862 the congregation moved from King Street to Albion Road (now Dalling Road 2 CONC ). The old chapel was demolished and by 1914 the site was covered by Cromwell Mansions. 2 CONT 2 CONT The family then moved to Laleham near Staines, at that time the scene of the Ministry of Re 2 CONC v C Jerram, the friend of Andrew Fuller. Edward refused an offer of training and incumbenc 2 CONC y as an Anglican evangelical from Rev C Jerram in favour of Nonconformist principles. For som 2 CONC etime he was in business while spending his free time helping his brother Rev John Adey wit 2 CONC h his preaching. Edwards preaching skills were soon recognised and upon recommendation of Re 2 CONC v W P Bull of Newport Pagnell Evangelical Institution he was introduced to the college as a m 2 CONC inisterial student. 2 CONT 2 CONT At Newport Pagnell Edward developed a love for rural mission work and in 1828 he accepted th 2 CONC e pastorate of the first Baptist Church in Lake Street, Leighton Buzzard, a position he maint 2 CONC ained for 25 years. The church was built before 1740 on the site now occupied by Chapel Mews. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward was a Baptist Minister and slavery abolitionist. He was an associate of Thomas Clarkso 2 CONC n, William Wilberforce and others and is included in Benjamin Robert Haydon's picture of Th 2 CONC e Anti-Slavery Convention 1840 which is on display in the National Portrait Gallery in Londo 2 CONC n (reference NPG 599). His family also have a small portrait of him which has a note on the b 2 CONC ack refering to a painting in the Law Courts of London. It has not been possible to trace th 2 CONC e picture in the Law Courts but The National Portrait Gallery say that Haydon's picture was n 2 CONC ever in the Law Courts it was hung in the offices of the Anti-Slavery Society until the 1880 2 CONC s when it was moved to the NPG. The National Portrait Gallery also has an 1841 lithograph ent 2 CONC itled The Abolition of the Slave Trade by John Eldfred Vinter which included Edward. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward resigned due to poor health having added 250 new members, built Ledburn Church and for 2 CONC med Burcott congregation. According to family tradition he helped Sir Joseph Paxton (1801 - 1 2 CONC 865) with reading, Paxton designed the fountains and greenhouses at Chatsworth then designe 2 CONC d Crystal Palace. Edward preached in gipsy camps, at Bedford execution and in London & Birmin 2 CONC gham Railway navvies camps. His obituary says that he was slandered by antinomians who seceed 2 CONC ed 1832. Verbal tradition at his church suggests that he perhaps led a young woman to expec 2 CONC t a marraige proposal from him and he either did not fulfil this or withdrew it. A number o 2 CONC f people left Lake Street church to set up another church in the town. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1834 Edward wrote the following letter to Mary Linnell: 2 CONT 2 CONT My Dear Madam, 2 CONT After mature deliberation, but with meat diffidence I have ventured to address you on an inte 2 CONC resting and important subject. In 1889 Fred 2 CONC erick Warne & Co published "Sunday School Readings, Recitations and Dialogues" edited by th 2 CONC e Rev Wm Thomas Adey of Haven Green, Ealing. 2 CONT 2 CONT On 13th September 1904 his mothers bible was seized by officers of the law to satisfy a clai 2 CONC m under the Education Act which William refused to pay on consientious grounds. His hand writ 2 CONC ten note in the bible states that he believed the demand to be a revival of the old Church Ra 2 CONC te under another name. He felt that it was an attempt to bring again the country under the do 2 CONC minion of priestcraft by capturing the children of protestants and nonconformists and exposin 2 CONC g them to sacerdotal influence in the schools of the nation. William signed the note in the b 2 CONC ible as president of the Local Citizens League. His address at this time was Leighton House 2 CONC , Kingsbridge, Devon. 2 CONT 2 CONT He was called out of retirement to be Honorary Pastor at Prewett Street, Bristol 1913-1921. A 2 CONC ccording to a 1902 Ordnance Survey Map and Wrights Street Directory Prewett Street Baptist Ch 2 CONC urch was on the left side of the street coming from St Mary Redcliffe Church with a builder 2 CONC s yard on one side and a chemical manure manufacturer on the other. It was faced by two pub 2 CONC s and a shop. Services were held on Sundays at 11.00am and 6.30pm and on Thursdays at 7.30pm. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1921 he retired again to Lympstone, Devonshire where the "home-call" came on 5th Decembe 2 CONC r 1925. 2 CONT 2 CONT His obituary in the 1927 Baptist Handbook states that he was a preacher of considerable powe 2 CONC r and always took a leading part in Association work. He retained into his old age his studen 2 CONC t habits and his keen interest in literature and social movements. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 10 Sep 2006 3 TIME 17:17:12 0 @I71@ INDI 1 NAME William /Pratt/ 2 SURN Pratt 2 GIVN William 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1779 2 PLAC Miserdine, Gloucestershire 1 _UID 46D5E771BC12D811AF5F000AE612096EB16A 1 FAMS @F19@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 12 Jun 2006 3 TIME 22:13:49 0 @I72@ INDI 1 NAME John Adey /Pratt/ 2 SURN Pratt 2 GIVN John Adey 2 NPFX Rev 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1811 2 PLAC Painswick 1 DEAT 2 DATE 4th January 1867 2 PLAC Bristol 1 _UID 49D5E771BC12D811AF5F000AE612096EB49A 1 FAMS @F66@ 1 FAMC @F19@ 1 NOTE John was named after his uncle Rev John Adey 2 CONT 2 CONT He attended Painswick Grammar School and was apprenticed to a tradesman in Painswick.
